Cheap website design in the UK: what a low quote buys

Cheap website design usually buys a one-off build and little else. Hosting, domain renewals, later changes, working forms and search set-up are often extra. Before you accept a low quote, ask who owns the domain, what each change costs and what you pay over two years, not just on day one.

What does a cheap web design quote usually leave out?

Usually the running costs. A low quote often prices the first build and stops there. Hosting, the domain renewal, later changes, working forms and search basics can each arrive as a separate bill. None of that makes a cheap quote bad. It means the headline number is rarely what you pay.

Read a quote as a list of jobs, not a price. For each job, ask who does it, when, and what it costs after launch. A designer who answers clearly is easier to compare than one with a lower figure and vague terms.

  • Domain. Whose name it is registered in, and what the yearly renewal costs.
  • Hosting. Who pays after the first year, and whether the padlock security certificate and backups are included.
  • Changes. How a new price, photo or opening time is charged, and how quickly it is done.
  • Forms. Whether enquiries reach your inbox, and who tests them.
  • Search basics. Whether page titles, descriptions and structure are set up, or sold later as search engine optimisation (SEO).

The rest of this guide takes each of these in turn, then shows how to compare a one-off quote with a monthly plan.

Who should own your domain name?

You should. Ask for the domain to be registered in your business name, with your email as the contact. If a designer registers it in their own name, moving away later can mean asking them for permission. A cheap build is a poor trade for losing the address your customers already know.

The body that oversees domain names, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), says in its guidance for domain name holders that it is your right to move a domain between registrars. That right is much easier to use when the registration is yours.

Before you sign, ask the designer to confirm in writing who the registrant will be. Then check the record after launch. Our guide to what a domain name costs in the UK explains renewals and what to look for.

What must a business website show and handle?

Some basics apply whatever the site costs. A limited company must show its company details. A contact form that collects names and phone numbers must tell people how you use that information. A cheap build that skips these is not saving you anything, because you still have to fix them.

If you trade as a limited company, the government's rules on company details say your website must show your registered number and your registered office address.

For forms, the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) explains the right to be informed. You must give people privacy information at the time you collect their personal data. That covers why you collect it, how long you keep it and who it is shared with. Ask your designer who writes that page and where the form links to it.

Then test the form yourself. Send an enquiry from your phone and check it arrives. A form that looks right but sends nothing costs you the very customers the website was meant to bring.

How do you judge a low web design quote?

Ask the same questions of every designer and compare the answers, not just the totals. A good low quote says plainly what is included and what is extra. A risky one is vague about ownership, changes and what happens if you want to leave.

  1. What exactly is included in the build, and what is extra?
  2. Who registers the domain, and in whose name?
  3. What does hosting cost after the first year?
  4. How are small changes charged after launch?
  5. Who tests the contact form, and who writes the privacy information?
  6. Which search basics are set up at launch?
  7. If I leave, can I take the site and the domain with me?

Be wary of big promises about Google. In its own advice on whether you need SEO help, Google says no one can promise the top spot in its results. It also says to find someone else if a provider promises first place.

If you would rather have one team answer all seven questions for you, our web design service covers the build, and the SEO service covers being found once the site is live.

How do you compare a one-off quote with a monthly plan?

Add up what each option costs over the same period. Two years is a fair window, because it includes at least one renewal. Put every line from the quote into that total, including changes you expect to need. Then compare the totals, and what each one includes.

For a one-off quote, your 24-month total is usually the sum of these lines:

  • The build fee you pay before launch
  • Two years of hosting, including any renewal price
  • Two years of domain renewal
  • The changes you expect, at the designer's stated rate
  • Any extras for forms, search set-up or a security certificate

Here is the same sum for a managed plan, using Buzzozo's Website plan. At the founding price of £149 a month, 24 months comes to £3,576, with £0 upfront. That founding price is for the first 100 businesses and is locked for life. After that, the plan is from £299 a month, which is £7,176 over 24 months.

That monthly price includes the build, hosting, the security certificate, security monitoring, daily backups, contact forms, on-page SEO and a set number of small changes on request. Anything beyond that allowance is quoted before work starts. The plans and prices page lists everything included.

Your own sum may show a one-off quote is cheaper over two years. That is a fair result. The point is to compare like with like, so a low headline does not hide a high total.

When is a managed website the better value?

When you would otherwise be the person chasing renewals, changes and broken forms. A managed website costs more each month than hosting alone. It also means one team builds the site, keeps it working and makes your small changes, so your time goes back into paid work.

With Buzzozo there is no contract, and you can cancel any time. Your domain is registered to you, not to us. The build is designed and written for your business, and it is ready for AI search tools as well as Google. The plan also includes an AI chat assistant with a monthly usage allowance, so simple customer questions get an answer while you are busy.

A managed plan is not for everyone. If you enjoy editing your own site, our guide to the cheapest website builder covers the do-it-yourself route. If you want the work done for you, read what a managed website includes.

Common questions

Is cheap web design worth it for a small business?

It can be, if the quote is clear about what is included and you own the domain. Compare the total over two years, including hosting, renewals and changes, before deciding.

What hidden costs come with a cheap website?

The usual ones are hosting after the first year, domain renewal, charges for later changes, fixing or testing contact forms, and search set-up sold as an extra.

How much does a Buzzozo website cost?

The Website plan is from £149 a month for the first 100 businesses, locked for life, and from £299 a month after that, with £0 upfront. You can start with a free 14-day trial, no card needed.
