Cheapest website builder: what cheap really costs

The cheapest website builder is the one with the lowest total over two or more years, not the lowest starting price. Introductory prices often apply only when you pay years ahead, then renew higher. Add the domain, email and your own time before you choose, and the cheapest option may look different.

A balance scale tips towards a pile of add-on boxes, a globe and an envelope, outweighing a small toy-block website, showing hidden website builder costs.

Why is the lowest starting price rarely the cheapest?

Because the starting price usually needs a long upfront commitment and then renews higher. A low monthly figure can hide a bill for several years paid on day one, followed by a renewal price well above the starting rate. The cheapest choice is the lowest total over the time you keep the site.

Here is a real example. On 29 October 2026, Hostinger's UK website builder page advertised paid plans from £2.39 a month. For its Premium plan, the page said you pay £114.72 today for 48 months as part of a promotion. The plan then renews at £10.99 a month for the same term. All of these prices exclude VAT.

That is good value if you are sure you will keep the site for four years and want to pay for them now. If you are not, the monthly figure on the banner is not the number to budget with.

What should you add to a builder's price?

Add everything the site needs to trade, not just the builder plan. For most small businesses that means a domain after any free first year, email on that domain, any paid apps or store fees, and the hours you spend building and updating the site yourself.

  • Domain renewal after the first year
  • Business email on your own domain, if you want one
  • Paid apps, extensions or transaction fees
  • A cookie consent banner if you use non-essential cookies
  • Your time to build, write and keep details current

The domain catch is common. The Wix plans page and Squarespace's free first-year domain help page both describe a free domain for the first year on qualifying plans, after which you pay to renew it. Our guide to what a domain name costs explains what to check.

Which legal basics must even a cheap website cover?

Cookie consent and, for limited companies, your company details. These apply whatever the site costs, and a builder will not always set them up for you. Budget a little time for them, or pay someone who will, because a cheap site that misses them is not saving you anything.

The Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) guidance on cookies says you must tell visitors about the cookies you set, explain what they do and get active consent. Listing them in a privacy policy alone does not count as consent.

If you trade as a limited company, the government's rules on company websites say your site must show your registered number, registered office address and where the company is registered.

How do you compare builders fairly?

Work out the total cost for the same period on each option, then divide by the number of months. Use 24 months as a sensible default, or the length of the upfront term if a builder asks you to pay for several years at once. Include renewals that fall inside that period.

  1. Write down what you pay today for each builder
  2. Add every renewal that falls inside the period
  3. Add the domain, email, apps and any fees
  4. Estimate your hours and put a value on them
  5. Divide the total by the months to get a fair monthly figure

When is a pay-monthly managed website the cheaper choice?

When you would otherwise spend many hours building and maintaining the site yourself. A managed plan costs more per month than a starter builder, but it includes the build and the updates, so your time goes back into the business instead of into the website.

Buzzozo's Website plan is from £149 a month for the first 100 businesses, locked for life, and from £299 a month after that, with £0 upfront. We build the site and keep it current for you. Common questions

What is the cheapest website builder in the UK?

There is no single answer, because starting prices change and often need years paid upfront. Compare the total cost over 24 months, including renewals, the domain, email and your own time.

Are free website builders really free?

A free plan lets you build a site, but builders usually need a paid plan for your own domain and to remove their branding. Wix, for example, says a Premium plan is needed for both.

Is a cheap website builder enough for a small business?

It can be, if you have time to build and update it yourself. If your time is better spent on paying work, a managed website may cost less overall.
