How to make a business website on Facebook

You cannot build a full business website on Facebook, but you can make a business Page. Log in, choose to create a Page and add your name, category, contact details and photos. A Page takes about an hour. A website on your own domain takes far longer to build yourself, or ten minutes of your time if we build it.

A faceless florist at her counter holds up a phone showing a social media business page beside a laptop showing her own shop website.

How do you set up a Facebook business Page?

Log in to Facebook, choose the option to create a Page, and fill in the details customers look for. Facebook moves its menus from time to time, so follow the labels on your screen. The details you add stay the same.

  1. Add your business name and the category that best describes it.
  2. Write a short bio that says what you do and where.
  3. Add your phone number, address, area and opening hours.
  4. Upload a profile photo and a cover photo.
  5. Add your website address, then invite people to follow the Page.

Setting up a Page takes about an hour. Keeping it active takes regular posts, replies to messages and fresh photos.

What can a Facebook Page not do for your business?

A Page lives on Facebook's address, in Facebook's layout, under Facebook's rules. You cannot add your own service pages, a proper enquiry form or a design that sets you apart. You also have no page of your own to answer each question customers search for.

  • No domain of your own, so your address and email do not match your business.
  • No room for full service pages, prices or detailed answers to customer questions.
  • Little control over who sees your posts.
  • Your audience sits on someone else's platform, and you can lose access to it.

Google says it automatically looks for websites to add to its index, so a site on your own domain can appear for the searches your customers make. A Page and a website work best together: the Page for updates, the website for enquiries.

How long does a business website take to build yourself?

A first business website takes about 40 to 70 hours to build yourself. Most of that goes on writing, photos and layout, plus learning the software. After launch, allow a few hours a month for updates and backups. These are our planning figures for a first-timer, not a promise.

Our guide to making a website yourself breaks those hours down task by task. If you need a gallery of your work, read how to make a portfolio website.

What skills does a website need that a Page does not?

A website asks more of you than a Page. You choose the design, write every word and keep the software safe. These are the skills owners usually lack the time for.

  • Design: a layout that looks professional on a phone and a laptop.
  • Copywriting: service pages that answer questions and win enquiries.
  • Search engine optimisation (SEO): titles and headings that match what people search for.
  • Technical set-up: domain, hosting, email and a contact form that sends.
  • Security: updates, backups and knowing how to restore them.

Common questions

Is a Facebook Page enough for a small business?

It is a good start for updates and reviews, but most businesses also need a website. A website gives you your own domain, full service pages, a proper enquiry form and a better chance of being found on Google.

Should my Facebook Page link to my website?

Yes. Add your website address to your Page details and the action button. Link back to the Page from your website footer, so customers can move between the two.
