What does SEO copywriting mean in practice?
It means writing each page around one question a customer is likely to search, then answering it clearly and giving them a reason to get in touch. A boiler repair page should explain what you fix, where you work and how fast you can come out, in the words a worried customer would type.
Google is open about what it wants here. Its guide to creating helpful, reliable, people-first content says people-first content is "created primarily for people, and not to manipulate search engine rankings". It asks whether a reader will leave "feeling like they've had a satisfying experience". SEO copywriting is how you write a page that passes that test and still gets found.
So there are two jobs in every page. The first is to match the search: use the plain words customers use, and answer the question behind them. The second is to persuade: show proof, remove doubt and make the next step obvious.
How is SEO copywriting different from ordinary copywriting?
Ordinary copywriting persuades someone who is already reading, such as a leaflet, an advert or a shop sign. SEO copywriting has to do that and also be found first, by someone typing a question into Google. That changes how the page is planned.
- Starting point: ordinary copy starts with what you want to say; SEO copy starts with what people search for.
- Opening: an advert can build up to the point; an SEO page answers the question in the first two or three sentences.
- Structure: SEO copy uses clear headings, often written as the questions people ask, so readers and search engines can see what each part covers.
- Detail: SEO copy carries the facts a searcher compares, such as areas covered, how pricing works and how long a job takes.
Good copy of either kind is still writing for people. The difference is that an SEO page has to earn the visit before it can make the sale.
Does SEO copywriting mean adding lots of keywords?
No. Repeating the same phrase over and over makes a page worse, for readers and for Google. Google's SEO Starter Guide says excessive repetition "is tiring for users". Google's spam policies describe keyword stuffing as filling a page with keywords "in an attempt to manipulate rankings", and treat it as spam.
You do not need every variation either. The same starter guide says Google's language matching systems "can understand how your page relates to many queries, even if you don't explicitly use the exact terms". Use your main phrase where it fits naturally: the page title, the main heading and the opening lines. Then write normally.
Length works the same way. The people-first guidance above asks whether you are writing to a word count because you think Google prefers one. Its answer is "No, we don't". If you are not sure which phrase a page should target, our guide to what SEO keywords are and how to choose them walks through it.

How do you write SEO copy, step by step?
Use the same short process for every page. It works for a home page, a service page or a blog post, and it keeps you writing for the customer rather than for a checklist.
- Find the question. Pick one thing customers search for, using what they ask you on the phone, Google's search suggestions or the searches shown in Google Search Console.
- Answer first. Put a direct answer in the first two or three sentences, before any background.
- Use question headings. Break the rest into short sections with clear headings. The starter guide recommends splitting long content into paragraphs and sections, with headings to help people navigate.
- Add the proof. Give the details people compare: areas you cover, how pricing works, how long things take and who does the work.
- Ask for one action. End with one clear call to action, such as call, book or get a quote, instead of five competing buttons.
- Read it aloud. Cut repeated phrases and anything you would not say to a customer face to face.
If writing is the part you never get round to, our website design service, with the words written for you, handles it as part of the build.
What does a before and after paragraph look like?
Here is a made-up plumbing firm in Leeds, to show the change. The first version is written for a search engine. The second is written for the person searching.
Before: Welcome to Smith Plumbing, the best plumber Leeds has to offer. Our plumber Leeds services cover all your plumbing Leeds needs. Call our Leeds plumbers today for a cheap plumber in Leeds.
After: Need a plumber in Leeds today? We fix leaks, blocked drains and boiler faults across Leeds and Wakefield, often on the same day. You get a fixed price before we start work. Call us or book online, and we will text you when we are on the way.
The second version still says "plumber in Leeds", once. It answers the searcher's real questions: can you come today, what do you fix, which areas, what will it cost and what happens next. It also ends with one clear action. That is SEO copywriting in a single paragraph.

Common questions
Is SEO copywriting the same as content writing?
They overlap. Content writing usually means articles and guides. SEO copywriting covers any page meant to be found in search, including service pages and your home page, and it always ends with a next step for the reader.
How long should an SEO page be?
As long as it takes to answer the question well, and no longer. Google says it has no preferred word count. A service page might need a few hundred words; a detailed guide may need more.
How many times should I use my keyword?
There is no magic number. Use the main phrase in the page title, the main heading and the opening lines, then write naturally. If a sentence reads oddly because of a keyword, rewrite it.
Can I use AI tools to write SEO copy?
You can use them to help, but check every fact and edit the result in your own voice. Google says that using automation or AI mainly to manipulate search rankings breaks its spam policies.
