What does LLM SEO mean?
LLM SEO means helping AI tools understand your business well enough to mention it in their answers. The aim is simple: when someone asks for a business like yours, the AI can find accurate facts about you.
A large language model is the technology behind AI chat assistants. Search engine optimisation is the work of helping search engines find and show your pages. LLM SEO joins the two.
You may also hear answer engine optimisation (AEO) or generative engine optimisation (GEO). These names overlap heavily, and suppliers use them in different ways. Our guide to what AEO means for a small business covers the answer-first side of the same work.
For what the GEO label covers and which business facts to check first, read our guide to generative engine optimisation (GEO).
The name matters less than the job. A customer types a question into an AI tool rather than a search box. The tool reads web pages, picks the ones it trusts and writes a reply. If your pages are hard to read or your details conflict, you are less likely to be part of that reply.
How do AI tools find your business?
Most AI search tools still start from pages they can crawl and index. If a search engine cannot reach or show your page, an AI feature built on it is unlikely to use it. So the first test is ordinary: can your important pages be found at all?
Google is clear on this. Its guidance on AI features in Google Search sets one condition for appearing as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode. The page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet. It also says there are no extra technical requirements and no special schema you must add.
AI assistants that search the web use crawlers too. A crawler is a program that visits pages and reads them. Your robots.txt file tells crawlers which parts of your site they may visit. Google's introduction to robots.txt explains how the file works and its limits. If your robots.txt blocks a tool's search crawler, you are asking that tool not to read your site.
Is LLM SEO different from ordinary SEO?
LLM SEO is mostly ordinary SEO done carefully, with more attention on clear answers and consistent facts. The foundations are the same: pages that load, can be indexed and explain what you do. The difference is in how the words are used once a tool has read them.
A search results page shows ten links and lets the customer choose. An AI answer often summarises a few sources in one reply. That rewards pages that answer a question in a sentence or two. It also rewards pages that name the service and place plainly, and agree with what other sites say about you.
Some advice in this area goes further than the evidence. Be wary of anyone who promises a guaranteed AI mention or sells special code that AI tools supposedly need. Search providers decide what they show, and their answers can change by question, location and date.
What should a small business check first?
Check that AI tools can reach your pages and that each page states your facts plainly. Most of this list takes an afternoon to review. None of it needs a new website, though an old site can make some items harder.
- Crawler access. Open your robots.txt file and check what it blocks. It should not block Googlebot or the crawlers of the AI tools your customers use.
- Indexed pages. Search for your business name and main service. Your key pages should appear in ordinary results.
- One plain sentence. Each service page should say what you do, who it is for and where you work, near the top.
- Real questions answered. Write short answers to the questions customers ask on the phone, such as prices, areas covered and timings.
- Matching business details. Your name, address, phone number and opening hours should match your Google Business Profile and directory listings.
- Honest structured data. Schema markup should describe what is visible on the page, never extra claims.
Local details matter more than many owners expect. If your local SEO shows one address on your site and another on a directory, an AI tool has two answers to choose from. Fix the facts at the source before writing new content.

Do you need an llms.txt file?
No, an llms.txt file is not required for AI search. It is a proposal for a plain-text file at your site's root that points AI tools to your most useful pages. Some tools read it, but no major search provider requires it.
The llms.txt proposal describes a short Markdown summary and a list of key links. The Google guidance above goes further and says you do not need new AI text files to appear in its AI features. Treat the file as a tidy summary of your site, not a ranking shortcut.
What does LLM SEO look like for a local business?
Imagine a plumber in Leeds whose home page says only "Quality work, fair prices". An AI tool asked for "an emergency plumber in north Leeds" has nothing specific to quote. The page never says emergency work, never names the area and never answers a question.
Now the same page opens with: "Emergency plumber covering north Leeds, available evenings and weekends. Call-outs usually within two hours." It adds a short answer about pricing and a list of postcodes covered. A tool now has clear, quotable facts. This is an example of the method, not a result from a named customer.
That is most of the work. You make the facts easy to find, easy to quote and the same everywhere. Our AI search visibility service does this for small businesses, and our step-by-step guide to getting into AI answers shows the process in more detail.
How do you measure LLM SEO?
Measure LLM SEO by checking named questions in named tools on a recorded date, then tracking enquiries. Write down the exact question, the tool, the date and whether your business appeared. Repeat the same checks each month so you compare like with like.
Keep three measures apart. A ranking is where a page appears in ordinary results. An AI mention is whether a tool names you in its reply. An enquiry is a real customer contacting you. Only the last one pays the bills, so tie your checks back to the enquiries your website receives.
Where does your website fit?
Your website is the main source AI tools read about you, so it needs to be fast, crawlable and kept up to date. A site that nobody updates slowly drifts from your real prices, hours and services. That drift is exactly what makes AI answers about you go wrong.
Our managed website service keeps the site, its technical foundations and its facts looked after for you. The live Buzzozo plans and pricing page lists the Website plan from £149 a month. Check the current plan before deciding.

Common questions
What is LLM SEO in simple terms?
LLM SEO means helping AI tools understand your business, so they can mention it accurately when someone asks for a service like yours.
Is LLM SEO the same as AEO or GEO?
The names overlap heavily. AEO, GEO and LLM SEO all describe making your information easy for AI answers to use. Suppliers use the terms in slightly different ways, so ask what work is included.
Do I need special code for AI search?
No. Google says there is no special schema or AI text file needed to appear in its AI features. Pages that can be indexed, with clear facts and honest structured data, are the starting point.
Should I block AI crawlers on my website?
That is your choice. If you want to appear in the search answers of an AI tool, do not block its search crawler in robots.txt. Some AI companies run separate crawlers for search and for model training, so you can allow one and block the other.
Can anyone guarantee my business appears in AI answers?
No. Search providers decide what their AI tools show, and answers change by question, location and date. A supplier can improve your pages and measure appearances, but cannot promise a mention.
How long does LLM SEO take to work?
It depends on how often tools crawl your site and how much needs fixing. Simple fixes such as unblocking a crawler can be picked up within days, while building clear content takes longer.
Can I try a Buzzozo website before paying?
Yes. Start the free 14-day trial with no card needed. Check your business facts and enquiry route during the trial, then decide whether to keep the website.
