What is content marketing? A plain UK guide

Content marketing is publishing useful material, such as articles, guides, videos and emails, that answers the questions your customers already ask. Instead of pushing an advert, you earn their attention and trust. Done well, it brings people to your website from search and AI answers, and turns that trust into enquiries.

A bakery owner writes helpful guides on a laptop that drift to customers reading on phones, showing how content marketing brings one through the door.

What does content marketing include?

Content marketing covers anything you publish to help a customer before they buy. The common thread is that each piece answers a real question. A price guide, a checklist or a short video showing how a job is done all count. An advert that only says "call us today" does not.

For a small UK business, the main formats are:

  • Articles and guides on your own website, each answering one customer question.
  • Service pages and FAQs written in the words your customers use.
  • Worked examples and before-and-after write-ups of real jobs, with the client's permission.
  • Email newsletters sent to people who asked to hear from you.
  • Short videos and social posts that point back to a full answer on your site.

Your website is the home for all of it. Social posts fade within days, but a good article on your own site can be found for years.

How is content marketing different from advertising?

Advertising rents attention, and content marketing earns it. An advert shows up only while you keep paying for it. A useful article keeps answering questions after you publish it, and every visit costs you nothing extra.

The trade-off is speed. An advert can bring calls tomorrow. Content takes months to build up, because search engines need time to find each page and trust it. Many businesses use both: adverts for quick wins, and content for the steady flow of enquiries that does not stop when the budget does. Our guide to small business marketing on a small budget sets out where each one fits.

How does content marketing help you get found in search and AI answers?

Search engines and AI assistants look for pages that answer a question clearly. Content marketing gives them those pages. Google has guidance on creating helpful, reliable, people-first content. It puts it plainly: "People-first content means content that's created primarily for people, and not to manipulate search engine rankings."

That is good news for an honest business. You do not need tricks. You need pages that explain what you do, answer the questions buyers ask and show your experience. AI answers draw on the same kind of clear, well-structured pages, which is the heart of AI search visibility.

Content marketing and search engine optimisation (SEO) overlap but are not the same thing. SEO is the wider job of making a site easy to find, including speed, structure and page titles. Content is the fuel it runs on. Our guide to what goes into an SEO strategy shows how the two fit, and what SEO copywriting is covers the writing itself.

What does a content marketing plan look like?

A good plan starts with your customers' questions, not with a posting schedule. Each piece should have one job: answer one question and lead the reader to the service that solves it.

  1. List the questions customers ask you on the phone, by email and at the door.
  2. Check which of those people also search for, and how they word them.
  3. Pick one question per piece and match it to the service page it supports.
  4. Write the answer in the first lines, then add the detail, steps and examples.
  5. Publish it, link it from related pages and share it once with your list.
  6. Check every few months which pieces bring visits and enquiries, then refresh or improve the rest.

For example, a boiler engineer might hear "why does my boiler keep losing pressure?" every week. One clear article answering that question, with a link to the repair service, does more than ten posts saying "we fix boilers".

What skills does good content marketing take?

Writing a blog post is easy. Writing one that gets found, gets read and gets someone to call you takes several skills at once. Most owners have one or two of them, and few have time for the rest.

  • Research. Finding the questions people really search for, and the words they use.
  • Plain writing. Answering first, cutting filler and keeping each paragraph to one point.
  • Search basics. Page titles, headings, internal links and structured data so search engines and AI answers understand each page.
  • Images and layout. Pictures, tables and steps that make an answer easy to scan on a phone.
  • Email rules. The Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) explains the UK rules on electronic mail marketing. It says "You must not send marketing emails or texts to individuals without specific consent." There is a limited exception for your own previous customers.
  • Measuring. Reading which pieces bring visits and enquiries, and acting on what you see.

Each skill can be learned. The hard part is doing all of them, every month, without letting the work slip when the business gets busy.

How much time does content marketing take?

More than most people expect. One good article is a day's work, not an hour's. The ranges below are planning figures from our own writing work, not measured averages, so treat them as a guide.

  • Researching the question and the searches around it: 2 to 3 hours per article.
  • Writing and checking a guide of about 1,200 words: 3 to 5 hours.
  • Images, layout, links and publishing: 1 to 2 hours.
  • Sharing it by email and social posts: 1 to 2 hours.
  • Checking results and refreshing older pieces: 2 to 4 hours a month.

Two articles a month adds up to roughly 16 to 28 hours. Those hours come out of your evenings or your paid work. Content also only pays off if you keep going, and a plan that stops after three posts rarely brings results.

What goes wrong when content marketing is done in a rush?

Most failed content plans fail quietly. Nobody complains about a weak article. It just never brings a single enquiry, and the time spent on it is gone.

  • Posts answer questions nobody asks, so search engines have no reason to show them.
  • Pieces are written for search engines rather than people, and read that way.
  • Articles never link to a service page, so readers leave without a next step.
  • Publishing stops after a few weeks, before anything has had time to work.
  • Emails go to bought or scraped lists, which breaks the consent rules above.

Each of these is avoidable with a plan, the right skills and steady time. That combination is the hard part for a busy owner.

Can you have content marketing done for you?

Yes. You can hand the research, writing, publishing and checking to a team that does it every day. You keep the expert knowledge of your trade, and we turn it into pages your customers find.

Buzzozo writes regular articles for people, Google and AI search, and they are available on any plan. We find the questions your customers ask and write each piece in plain UK English. Then we link it to the right service page and publish it on your site. Article work is quoted after a quick chat, because the right amount depends on your market and how much competition you face.

The articles sit on a site built to be found. Every Buzzozo website includes on-page SEO and an AI-search-ready build: clear service pages, FAQs in your customers' words and structured data. The Website plan starts from £149 a month at the founding price, with no contract, and you can cancel any time. Your domain stays registered in your name.

Common questions

Is content marketing the same as SEO?

No, but they work together. SEO is the wider job of making your website easy to find, including speed, structure and page titles. Content marketing is the useful material that gives search engines and AI answers something worth showing. Good SEO with no content has little to rank, and good content on a slow, messy site struggles to be found.

How long does content marketing take to work?

Expect months, not weeks. Search engines need time to find new pages and decide whether to trust them, and a steady run of useful articles builds that trust. Nobody can honestly promise a ranking or a date. Watch which pieces bring visits and enquiries, and build on those.

Do I need to send emails as part of content marketing?

No, but email is a good way to share each new piece with people who already know you. In the UK you need specific consent to send marketing emails to individuals, with a limited exception for your own previous customers. Never buy an email list.
