Pay monthly websites: what UK businesses should check

A pay monthly website lets a small business get a site built and run for a monthly fee, instead of a large upfront bill. The fee usually covers hosting and upkeep. It suits busy owners who want the work done for them. Before you sign, check who owns the domain, how you leave and what the fee covers.

The web company builds the site, hosts it and keeps it running, so you can get on with your work. This guide explains what the fee usually covers and how it compares with the other routes. It ends with six checks to make before you choose a provider, including us.

What a pay monthly website usually includes

In our experience, plans bundle the build with the jobs that keep a site working. Those jobs are web hosting, the secure sockets layer (SSL) certificate that puts the padlock in your browser, backups, software updates and security checks. Many plans also include a few small changes each month, such as new prices or opening hours.

The details vary between providers. One plan might include a site written for you, with photos and an enquiry form. Another might give you a template and leave the words to you. Ask for the list in writing, so you can compare like with like.

In the government's 2025 survey, 43% of UK businesses reported a cyber security breach or attack in the previous 12 months[4]. The National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) tells small organisations that updates fix bugs in software that criminals could use to break in[3]. The software behind a website needs the same care, and on a pay monthly plan your provider should do it.

How it compares with a one-off build or doing it yourself

Most small businesses choose between three routes. Each one puts the cost and the work in a different place.

With a do-it-yourself website builder, you pay a monthly subscription and do the design, writing and upkeep yourself. It usually costs the least cash. It also takes the most of your own time, and the result depends on your skills.

With a one-off build, you pay a designer upfront. You then still need hosting, updates and backups, done by you or on a separate care plan. When we checked more than 50 published UK care plan tiers in October 2026, the typical small-business tier cost £69 to £85 a month.[6]

With a pay monthly website, one company builds the site and looks after it for a single fee. You spend less upfront and less of your own time. Over several years you may pay more in total than for a one-off build, so weigh the convenience against the total.

We think the right choice depends on two things: how much time you have, and how often your site needs to change. A salon that posts new offers every week needs more help than a joiner whose prices rarely move.

Six things to check before you sign

Use these checks on any provider, including us. Ask for the answers in writing before you commit.

Who owns the domain name

Your domain name is your address on the web and in your email. Ask for it to be registered in your name or your company's name, not the provider's. The body that oversees domain names says the registrant takes sole responsibility for the registration and use of the domain[1]. If the provider is the registrant, you depend on them to hand it over when you leave.

Who owns the website itself

Providers handle this in different ways. Some let you buy the site when you leave. Others keep the design and code, and you go with only your words and photos. Ask what you can take with you, in what form and at what price.

How long the contract runs and how you leave

Look for the minimum term, the notice period and any exit fee. A 24 month minimum term is a much bigger commitment than a rolling monthly plan. Check what happens to your site and your email on the day the plan ends.

What the monthly fee covers

Ask which of these are in the price: hosting, the SSL certificate, backups, updates, security monitoring, changes and support. Then ask what counts as a small change, and what happens when you need a bigger one. A fair provider quotes extra work before starting it.

How backups and restores work

The NCSC advises small organisations to keep backups and to know how to restore them. It also says to check that a backup holds all the important data[2]. Ask how often the provider backs up your site, where it keeps the copies and how quickly it can put one back.

How fast the site is and who answers when it breaks

Google says its core ranking systems look to reward content that provides a good page experience[5]. Loading speed is part of that, so ask who keeps the site fast as you add pages and photos. Ask, too, how you reach a person when something goes wrong, and how soon they reply.

How the Buzzozo website plan works

We built our managed website plan around the checks above. We design, write and build your site for your business, not from a template with your logo dropped in. We build it free, and it is live in days. You can try it free for 14 days and see it working before you decide.

On day 14 you decide. Keep it on a plan, or the site comes down and you owe nothing. The Website plan is from £149 a month for the first 100 businesses, who keep £149 a month for life. After the first 100, it is from £299 a month. Prices exclude VAT where applicable.

The plan includes fast UK hosting on renewable energy with a content delivery network (CDN), so pages load quickly, and SSL kept renewed. It also covers a firewall and malware protection with round-the-clock monitoring, daily backups, updates and speed tuning. You also get on-page search engine optimisation (SEO), enquiry forms, click-to-call and WhatsApp. We include a set number of small changes each month, and we quote any work beyond that before it starts.

Plans are monthly rolling. You can cancel any time with 30 days' notice, and your domain stays registered in your name. If you want to own the site outright, we give you a fair one-off price based on what we built. If you already have a site, we move it for free. You talk to real people by phone, WhatsApp and email.

When another route may suit you better

A pay monthly website does not suit every business. If you enjoy building pages and have the time, a do-it-yourself builder may cost you less. You may need a large custom system that you own from day one. If so, a one-off build with a separate care plan may fit better.

If a managed site sounds right, the quickest test is to see one built for your business. Start your free 14-day trial and judge it with your own customers in mind before you pay anything. There is no card to enter and no contract to sign.

Common questions

Do you pay monthly for websites?

You can. Many UK web companies build and run a website for a monthly fee instead of a large upfront bill. The fee usually covers hosting, upkeep and some changes. Check the minimum term and who owns the domain before you sign.

What is the cheapest monthly website?

A do-it-yourself builder usually has the lowest monthly fee, because you do the design, writing and upkeep yourself. Compare the total cost over two or three years, including your own time, before you decide.

Can I leave a pay monthly website contract?

It depends on the terms. Check the contract for a minimum term, a notice period and an exit fee. Buzzozo plans are monthly rolling, and you can cancel any time with 30 days' notice.

Will I own my domain name?

You should. Ask for the domain to be registered in your name or your company's name. With Buzzozo, your domain stays registered in your name.

How much does a website cost in the UK?

It depends on the route: a do-it-yourself builder, a one-off build plus a care plan, or a pay monthly plan. Our Website plan is from £149 a month for the first 100 businesses, and we build the site free before you decide.
