How much should you budget for SEO?
For a substantial UK agency programme, a planning range of £1,250 to £5,000 a month is a useful starting point. It is not a market average or a Buzzozo quote. Your price depends on the pages, competition and work agreed. Ask whether tax and implementation are included before comparing offers.
The lower end reflects a published agency starting price excluding value added tax (VAT). The upper end reflects a published UK pricing guide. These are commercial examples checked in October 2026, rather than an independent survey. A complex national campaign can cost more. A focused repair can be a separate project.
Start with the result you need. A plumber serving one area needs a different plan from a shop selling across the country. Your proposal should say which services and locations matter, which pages need work, and what will be done first.
What are you paying for each month?
You are paying for research, skilled decisions and changes to your website. A useful fee funds work that customers can read or use. Reports explain that work and its results. A report alone does not fix a broken page or answer a buyer's question.
- Research: find the searches that match what you sell and the questions customers ask before buying.
- Technical work: find problems that stop search engines reading pages, then make and test the fixes.
- Writing: turn your expertise into clear service pages and useful answers, with accurate facts.
- Page improvements: make navigation, titles, headings and enquiry routes work together.
- Review: compare relevant searches, visits and enquiries, then choose the next piece of work.
The judgement takes time. A title change is quick to type. Choosing the right page, preserving its useful content and checking what happened takes longer. Publishing lots of words without that care can leave you with more pages and no clearer reason to buy.
Our SEO and AI search service starts with that groundwork. We check what your site needs and quote for the work, so you can hand it over with a clear scope.
Is a monthly retainer better than a one-off project?
A monthly retainer suits ongoing research, writing and improvement. A fixed project suits a defined task, such as an audit or a set of technical repairs. The right choice depends on whether you need continued delivery or a specific problem solved.
- Monthly programme: agree priorities and monthly delivery. Check who writes, implements and reports.
- Fixed project: name the pages, fixes and completion checks. Check whether making the changes is included.
- Paid advice: agree a clear question and written recommendations. Check who will carry out the advice afterwards.
An audit that lists problems is different from a project that fixes them. Ask who has access to the website and who approves changes. If you must pay someone else to implement every recommendation, include that cost when you compare proposals.

Why does good SEO take skill and time?
Good work connects search demand with your actual business. Someone must understand your customers, check your facts, improve the site and test the changes. Those tasks need different skills. They also need your input when the answer depends on how your business works.
For example, two services can sound similar but lead to different enquiries. Putting both on one vague page saves writing time but makes the offer harder to understand. Splitting them without a reason creates duplication. The skilled decision is knowing which approach helps the buyer and how to connect the pages.
Speed matters too. Large images, unclear layouts and broken forms can waste the visits you already earn. Our website design and ongoing care brings the page, its content and its enquiry route together. Paying for traffic before fixing that journey leaves a gap in your plan.
How do you judge whether a quote is worth it?
Compare the scope, evidence and responsibilities before the headline fee. Ask what will change on your site, who will do it and how you will know it worked. A clear proposal makes those answers easy to find.
- Ask which customer searches and service pages the work will target.
- Check whether writing, development and testing are included.
- Agree who supplies facts, photos and approvals.
- Request a record of changes, with priorities for the next month.
- Agree how enquiries will be counted, alongside search visits.
- Read the tax, setup, cancellation and ownership terms.
Be cautious about guaranteed positions. Google's guidance on hiring an SEO warns that nobody controls the top position. It also says results usually take four months to a year after changes begin. That is general guidance, not a timetable for your business.
How can you work out what the spend needs to earn?
Use profit from new customers, rather than revenue alone. Divide your monthly spend by the contribution from one new customer. That gives you a starting point for discussing whether the work can pay its way. It is a calculation, not a sales forecast.
Here is a hypothetical example: a £1,500 monthly programme and £300 contribution per new customer need five additional customers to cover that fee. Contribution means the sale minus the costs of providing it, before your wider overheads. Include your own figures and tax treatment when you do the sum.
Five customers also require enough suitable enquiries and a working sales process. Count qualified enquiries, booked work and contribution over time. A jump in visits from people outside your service area is less useful than a smaller rise in enquiries you can serve. Keep notes on changes so you can discuss results with context.
What does Buzzozo include, and what is quoted separately?
Buzzozo includes on-page SEO and an AI-search-ready build in the Website plan. Further SEO, local SEO and regular articles are priced per job after a quick chat. The website subscription is not a promise of an unlimited monthly SEO campaign.
Artificial intelligence (AI) assistants need clear, accurate answers about your services too. We build those answers into your website alongside clear service pages and structured information. This helps the site explain your business consistently; it does not promise search positions or mentions in AI answers.
The Website plan starts from £149 a month at the founding price for the first 100 businesses. Start with a free 14-day trial, no card needed, and cancel any time. The current plans and prices explain the website bundle. We agree any extra search work separately, around your business and the competition.
Want the work handled for you? Start your free 14-day website trial. No card needed. Cancel any time. Tell us what you sell and where you work, and we will plan the website and discuss the search work it needs.
Common questions
Will paying for SEO put my site first?
No. Search positions are controlled by search engines and change over time. Ask for clear work, honest reporting and evidence of relevant enquiries. Do not treat a promised position as a reliable buying decision.
Is ongoing SEO included in the £149 website plan?
The Website plan includes on-page SEO and an AI-search-ready build. Further SEO, local SEO and regular articles are quoted per job. The founding website price is from £149 a month for the first 100 businesses. Start with a free 14-day trial, no card needed, and cancel any time.
Can I pay for an audit without a monthly contract?
A fixed project can cover a defined audit or repair. Agree the scope and whether the fee includes making the changes. Advice on its own still needs someone to implement and test it. Ask Buzzozo to scope the work around your website.
Does SEO cost include advertising?
Check the proposal. Organic search work and paid advertising are separate activities. If advertising is part of your plan, agree the media spend and management fee separately so you understand the total commitment.
