Wix vs WordPress: which is better for a small business?

For a small business, Wix suits an owner who wants to build a site alone. You drag and drop, and hosting is included. WordPress gives you more control and more add-ons, but you look after hosting, updates and security, or pay someone to. If you want neither job, a managed website is a third option.

Two routes to a small business website, a drag-and-drop page builder and a plugin-filled server stack, joined by a path to a finished site on a laptop.

What is the difference between Wix and WordPress?

Wix is a website builder: one company gives you the design tools, the hosting and the support in one monthly plan. WordPress is free software that runs on hosting you choose, so you pick the design, the add-ons and who looks after it.

  • Wix: you edit the page as you see it, and the company keeps the site running.
  • WordPress: you can change almost anything, but you or your developer are responsible for keeping it safe.
  • Moving later: a WordPress site can move to another host. A Wix site stays on Wix, so leaving means a rebuild.

How much do Wix and WordPress cost in the UK?

Both can look cheap at the start. Startups.co.uk found the cheapest Wix plan costs £9 a month paid yearly, or £11.50 a month paid monthly. The same guide puts WordPress at about £36 to £1,000 a year with hosting, themes and add-ons.

The hosting price is the part that often catches people out. One popular UK WordPress host shows a low first-year price, then its starter plan renews at £13.99 a month plus value added tax (VAT). Check the renewal price, not the welcome offer, before you compare.

Which is easier for a small business owner to use?

Wix is easier for most owners on day one. You choose a template and edit text and photos where they sit on the page. WordPress takes longer to learn, and its editor changes with the theme you pick, so two WordPress sites can feel quite different.

Ease of use matters because a site that is hard to edit goes out of date. Prices, opening hours and services change. If changing a line of text means a phone call to a developer, it often waits for months.

Which is better for Google and AI search?

Neither platform wins search engine optimisation (SEO) on its own. Google says its systems look for helpful, reliable content written for people, and both Wix and WordPress can serve that. What you write, how fast the page loads on a phone and how clearly you describe your services matter more than the platform.

The same goes for AI search, where tools answer a question and name a few businesses. They pick up pages that state plain facts: what you do, where, for whom and at what price. Our guide on getting your business into AI answers shows what to put on the page.

What does each site need after launch?

A Wix site needs fresh content and an eye on your plan's renewal date. A WordPress site needs regular updates to the core software, the theme and every add-on, plus backups and security checks. Skipped updates are a common way small sites get hacked.

Many owners pay for that work. UK WordPress care plans such as ThriveWP's start from £49 a month, on top of hosting. That is a fair price for peace of mind, but it belongs in your budget from the start.

Is there a third option besides Wix and WordPress?

Yes. A managed website is built, hosted and looked after for you for one fixed monthly fee. You do not pay thousands upfront, rent hosting or hire a developer. You tell the team what to change and they do it.

Here is how the bills add up when you buy the parts separately, using the published UK prices above:

  • A custom design: agencies in the Startups.co.uk guide range from £300 to £10,000 or more, paid before launch.
  • Hosting: £13.99 a month plus VAT at renewal for a WordPress starter plan.
  • A care plan for updates and fixes: from £49 a month.
  • A chat assistant to answer visitors: an extra monthly subscription, sold per seat.

Our plans and prices page sets these costs beside each other with the source for every figure. The Website plan is from £149 a month at the founding price for the first 100 businesses. Design, hosting, updates and an AI chat assistant are included.

Which should you choose?

Choose by how much time you have and how much control you need. Each route suits a different kind of owner.

  • Pick Wix if you enjoy building, have a few spare evenings and want one simple bill.
  • Pick WordPress if you need special features, want to own every file and have a developer you trust.
  • Pick a managed website if you would rather spend your time on customers and want a site that keeps working without you.

Here are the three side by side, using the UK prices above:

  • Starting price: Wix from £9 a month paid yearly. WordPress about £36 to £1,000 a year. A managed website from £149 a month.
  • Hosting: included with Wix. You choose and pay a host for WordPress. Included with a managed website.
  • Editing: you, in the Wix editor. You or a developer on WordPress. The team, when you ask, on a managed website.
  • Upkeep: fresh content and renewals on Wix. Updates, backups and security checks on WordPress. Done for you on a managed website.
  • Moving later: leaving Wix means a rebuild. A WordPress site can move to another host.

What does this choice look like for a real business?

It usually starts with a builder and moves to a managed site once the owner runs out of evenings. Take a typical case: the business is invented, the steps are real.

A dog groomer builds a Wix site over three weekends. It looks good, but bookings still come by phone, and nobody answers the chat at night. A year later she moves to a managed website. The new site answers questions after hours with an AI chat assistant and sends each enquiry, with the dog's name and the date wanted, straight to her phone.

Common questions

Is Wix or WordPress cheaper for a small business?

Wix is usually cheaper and simpler at the start because hosting is included. WordPress can cost less or much more, depending on hosting, add-ons and whether you pay someone to keep it updated.

Can I move my site from Wix to WordPress later?

Not directly. You can copy your words and photos across, but the design has to be rebuilt. Plan for that if you think you may switch.

Is WordPress better for SEO than Wix?

Not in itself. Both can rank well. Clear, useful pages, fast loading on phones and accurate business details matter far more than the platform.

Do I need a developer for WordPress?

Not to start, but many owners end up paying for one or for a care plan, because updates, backups and security checks need doing every month.

What is a managed website?

A site that a team builds, hosts and looks after for a fixed monthly fee. You ask for changes and they make them, so there is no upfront build bill or separate hosting.
