What does AEO mean in plain words?
AEO means shaping your website so a machine can lift a clear, correct answer from it. An answer engine is any tool that replies with an answer instead of a list of links. That includes AI assistants, Google's AI Overviews and voice assistants on phones and speakers.
Think about how your customers search now. A customer with a dripping tap used to type a few words, such as a trade and a town. Today they may ask a whole question: who can fix a leaking boiler near me tonight, and what will it roughly cost? The answer they get may name two or three businesses and quote a line from each website. AEO is about being one of those names, with the right facts beside it.
You may also see the terms generative engine optimisation (GEO) or AI search optimisation. They describe much the same work. The label matters less than the result: a website that answers your customers' questions clearly and gets your business facts right.
How is AEO different from SEO?
AEO is not a separate system. Google says there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. A page must be indexed and eligible to show in Google Search with a snippet. So good SEO comes first, and AEO sharpens how your answers are written.
The difference is one of emphasis. SEO asks whether your page will rank for a search. AEO asks whether a machine can find a short, correct answer on your page and trust it. In practice that changes how you write far more than how your website is built.
- SEO: pages that can be crawled and indexed, titles that match what people search, a fast and secure website and links from other sites.
- AEO: a direct answer near the top of each page, headings that ask the questions customers really ask, and business details that match everywhere they appear.
- Both: useful pages written for people first, which is what Google's guidance on creating helpful, people-first content asks for.
Do you still need to rank on Google for AEO?
Ranking still helps, but it is not the whole story. AI answers often quote pages from beyond the top few results, especially pages that answer a narrow question well. So strong rankings remain the best starting point, and a young website with clear answers still has a fair chance.
In an Ahrefs study of AI Overview citations published in March 2026, 37.9% of the pages cited in AI Overviews also appeared in the first 10 blocks of the results page. The rest were split almost evenly between positions 11 to 100 and pages beyond the top 100. In the same company's July 2025 study, that overlap was about 76%.
The lesson for your business is simple. Do the search basics well, then make every important page answer one question better than anyone else nearby.

How do you do AEO on a small business website?
Start with the questions your customers already ask you. Answer each one in plain words near the top of the right page, then add the detail underneath. Keep your name, address, phone number, hours and prices identical everywhere. Most of the work is careful writing and tidy facts, not new technology.
- List 10 real questions. Write down what people ask on the phone, by email or at the counter before they buy. Use their words, not trade terms.
- Answer each one in 2 or 3 sentences. Put the short answer straight under a heading that asks the question. Then explain.
- Match your business facts. Your website, Google Business Profile and directory listings should show the same name, address, phone number and opening hours. Google's AI features guidance also asks owners to keep Business Profile details up to date.
- Make sure the words are on the page. Put answers in the page text, not only inside images, videos or pop-ups. Any structured data should match what visitors see.
- Add specific proof. Real prices, the areas you cover, photos of your own work and named accreditations give an answer something solid to quote.
- Check what answers say about you. Each month, ask an AI assistant the questions from step 1. Note which businesses it names and anything it gets wrong about yours.
What does AEO look like on a real page?
On a page, AEO looks like a clear question, a short direct answer and specific facts. Here is a made-up example. A dog groomer in Bristol has a services page that opens with: welcome to our family-run salon, where every pet is treated like one of our own. It is friendly, but it answers nothing.
The AEO version of the same page opens with a heading such as: how much does a full groom cost? Under it sit two lines with the starting price for a small dog, what is included and how long it takes. Below that come the areas covered, the opening hours and how to book. When someone asks an AI assistant about dog grooming prices in Bristol, that page now has a sentence worth quoting.
None of that change is technical. It needs someone who knows what customers ask and is willing to say the answer plainly.
What should you avoid with AEO?
Avoid anyone who promises your business a place in AI answers. Nobody controls what Google or an AI assistant shows. Be wary of paying only for special AI files or markup. Google's guidance says you need no new machine-readable files, AI text files or special structured data for its AI features.
- Pages stuffed with every possible version of a question read badly for people and add nothing for machines.
- A copied competitor FAQ gives an answer engine nothing new to quote.
- Old prices or opening hours on one page and new ones on another make your business look unreliable.
- Hiding your answers inside a chat window or a PDF makes them harder for search engines to read.

Common questions
Is AEO the same as SEO?
No, but they overlap. SEO helps your pages rank in search results. AEO helps AI answers find, understand and quote a clear answer from your pages. Google says the same search basics apply to its AI features, so do both together.
Do I need special code or files for AEO?
Not for Google. Its guidance says no new machine-readable files, AI text files or special structured data are needed for AI Overviews or AI Mode. Clear, crawlable pages with accurate facts matter more.
Can anyone promise my business will appear in AI answers?
No. Google and AI assistants decide what they show, and answers change by question, place and day. A provider can improve your pages and measure where you appear, but it cannot promise a mention.
How long does AEO take to work?
There is no fixed timeline. Search engines must first crawl and index your updated pages, and answers change over time. Check the same questions each month and keep a note of what appears, so you can see whether anything moves.
Is AEO worth it for a small local business?
We think so, because the work also helps customers: clear answers, honest prices and accurate details. Local businesses often hold specific facts, such as the areas they cover and their opening hours, that answer engines can quote.
