How do I get my business on Google?

To get your business on Google, do two things. Create a free Google Business Profile so you appear on Maps and in local results, and make sure your website can be found and indexed so your pages show in search. Both are free. The work is in getting the details right and keeping them current.

A baker in a flour-dusted apron checks search results on a laptop at a small high-street bakery counter, as a local shop works on being found online.

Where can my business show up on Google?

There are two main routes. Your Google Business Profile puts you on Maps and in the local box of results, and your website puts your pages in the ordinary search results and in Google's AI answers. Most small businesses need both, because customers use both.

  • Google Maps and the local results: driven by your Business Profile, its reviews and how close you are.
  • Search results: driven by your website's pages, what they say and whether Google has indexed them.
  • AI Overviews and AI Mode: drawn from pages that are already indexed, with links back to the sites they use.

How do I get my business on Google Maps?

Create or claim your free Business Profile, verify it, and complete every field: name, category, hours, phone number, website and photos. Verification is the step that makes you visible. Our full guide on getting on Google Maps and ranking higher walks through each step, including what to do if you visit customers rather than run a shop.

How do I check if Google can find my website?

Search Google for site: followed by your domain, for example site:yourbusiness.co.uk. If your pages appear, Google has them. If nothing comes back, Google has not indexed your site yet. Google's SEO (search engine optimisation) starter guide recommends this same quick check before anything else.

Also look at what shows up. If your home page appears but your service pages do not, those are the pages to work on. If an old page you deleted still shows, Google will catch up when it next crawls your site.

How do I get my website indexed on Google?

Most sites are found on their own, because Google follows links from other pages. You can help it along with a few free steps, and none of them need technical skill beyond logging in. Work through this list once, then check again in a week.

  1. Link to your site from your Business Profile. It is a link Google already trusts, and customers use it too.
  2. Check nothing is blocking Google. Ask whoever built your site to confirm the pages are not set to noindex and are not hidden behind a login.
  3. Add your site to Search Console. It shows which pages are indexed and why others are not.
  4. Submit your sitemap. A sitemap is a list of your pages. Most website platforms create one at /sitemap.xml.
  5. Request indexing for key pages. In Search Console, inspect your home page and main service pages and ask Google to crawl them.
  6. Earn a few links. Local directories, suppliers, trade bodies and local news sites all help Google find and trust you.

Search Console is a free service from Google, and you do not have to sign up to appear in Google. It simply shows you what Google sees and tells you when something is wrong.

How long does it take to appear on Google?

Expect days to weeks for a new page and longer to climb for competitive searches. Google says crawling can take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks, and asking more than once for the same page does not speed it up. A new website with no links can take longer still.

A Business Profile is usually quicker, because it can show as soon as verification is done. That is a good reason to set it up first and work on the website alongside it.

Not sure where your site stands? Every website we build comes with on-page SEO and an AI-search-ready build, with a sitemap and clean structure in place from day one.

Do I need to pay Google to appear in search?

No. The ordinary search results, Google Maps listings and Business Profiles are all free. Google Ads are a separate paid product that shows labelled adverts. They can bring calls quickly, but they stop when you stop paying, while a well-built site and profile keep working.

How do I get my business into Google's AI Overviews?

The same way you get into ordinary search. Google says there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode: a page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet. Clear answers to the questions customers ask make a page easier to quote.

What should I do in my first week?

Here is a simple plan for a new bakery, which works for most local businesses. Do one thing a day and the basics are done within a week.

  1. Monday: create or claim the Business Profile and start verification.
  2. Tuesday: run a site: search on your domain and note which pages are missing.
  3. Wednesday: set up Search Console and submit the sitemap.
  4. Thursday: make sure your name, address, phone number and hours match on the site and the profile.
  5. Friday: ask five regular customers for a Google review.
  6. Next week: check Search Console for errors and add photos to the profile.

Common questions

Is it free to put my business on Google?

Yes. A Google Business Profile is free, appearing in the ordinary search results is free, and Search Console is free. You only pay if you choose Google Ads, or if you pay someone to build or manage your website and profile.

Do I need a website to be on Google?

Not to appear on Google Maps: a Business Profile can show without one. But a website lets you appear in the main search results and in AI answers, and it gives Google more reasons to rank your profile, so most businesses benefit from both.

Why is my website not showing on Google?

Common causes are that the site is new and not yet crawled, pages are set to noindex, nothing links to it, or the pages are thin. Run a site: search, then check Search Console's page indexing report for the reason.

How do I get Google to show my business when people search my name?

Verify your Business Profile, use your real business name on the profile and your site, and make sure your home page title includes it. Searches for a business name usually show the profile within days of verification.

Does social media help my business appear on Google?

A little. Social profiles can appear when people search your name, and they can send visitors to your site. They do not replace a Business Profile or a website, which are what Google relies on for local and service searches.
