What should an artist’s website do?
An artist’s website has three jobs. It shows the work at its best, so a curator, collector or client can judge it in a minute. It answers the practical questions about size, medium, price and availability. And it gives each visitor one clear next step: enquire about a piece, ask for a commission or buy a print.
The work has to be readable by search engines as well as people. Google says alternative text is the most important attribute for describing an image, and that it also helps people who use screen readers (Google Search Central: image SEO (read 29 October 2026)). So every artwork gets a real title, a short description and alternative text that says what the piece shows, not a filename from your camera.
Your rights travel with the work. UK guidance says you get copyright protection automatically, with no application or fee, and there is no UK register of copyright works (GOV.UK: How copyright protects your work (read 29 October 2026)). We add a clear copyright line and image credits to your website, and we only publish images you are entitled to use.
From portfolio to print shop: what does each visitor need?
| Portfolio by series | A curator or gallery judging the body of work. Group the work into series or years, with the strongest pieces first. Large images that load quickly on a phone, and a short note on each series, let a visitor see how the practice has developed. |
|---|---|
| One page per artwork | A collector deciding whether a piece is right for them. Title, medium, dimensions, year and whether it is available, sold or on loan. A price or a "price on request" line, and an enquiry button that names the piece, so you know exactly what they asked about. |
| About, statement and CV | A gallery, prize panel or press writer checking your background. A short statement in plain English, a portrait you are happy to publish, and a CV of exhibitions, residencies and awards. Keep a print-ready version for open calls. |
| Commissions | A client who wants a piece made for them. How a commission works, from first idea to delivery, with typical sizes, lead times and how deposits work. A form that asks for size, subject, price range and deadline gives you a brief you can answer. |
| Prints and available work | A buyer ready to pay for a print or an original. Edition size, paper, print method, sizes and postage, set out before checkout. A clear returns and cancellation note, so a buyer knows where they stand. |
| News, exhibitions and mailing list | A follower who wants to see the next show or release. Upcoming exhibitions, open studios and new editions, with a sign-up for your mailing list. Collectors who already know the work are often the first to buy the next piece. |
Your own website includes only the parts your practice needs.
How should your website handle commissions, prints and originals?
Prints sold online: when you sell to the public online, UK guidance says you must tell the customer they can cancel their order up to 14 days after it is delivered, without giving a reason. If you do not tell them, they can cancel at any time in the next 12 months (GOV.UK: online and distance selling for businesses (read 29 October 2026)). We put that cancellation note beside every print listing and draft the wording for your order confirmations.
Commissions: the Consumer Contracts Regulations list goods “made to the consumer’s specifications or are clearly personalised” among the circumstances that exclude the cancellation rules (legislation.gov.uk: regulation 28 (read 29 October 2026)). That is why your commission page should set out the brief, the stages, the deposit and what happens if a client changes their mind, in writing, before work starts. Take your own advice on your terms; we make sure the website states them clearly.
Originals that sell on: the Artist’s Resale Right entitles the creator of an original work of art to a royalty each time it is resold through an auction house or art market professional, when the sale price reaches or exceeds £1,000. The right lasts for your lifetime and 70 years after (GOV.UK: Artist’s Resale Right (read 29 October 2026)). A dated record of each original on your website, with its title, year and first sale, helps you and your estate keep track of the work.
Taking payment: the Website plan includes enquiry and buy routes that link to the checkout service you already use. A full online store with stock, editions and shipping rules is scoped and quoted separately, so you only pay for it when the print side needs it.
How do we build your artist website remotely?
Buzzozo works with artists remotely across the UK by phone, WhatsApp and email. You never need to leave the studio. You know the work; we turn it into a website you can check on your own phone.
- Choose the work. Send the images you want to show, with titles, media, sizes and years. We help you pick the series and the order, so the strongest work is seen first.
- Write the words. We draft your statement, artwork descriptions and alternative text from what you tell us. You approve every word before launch, and we never invent exhibitions, prices or quotes.
- Set the next steps. Decide what each visitor should do: enquire about a piece, ask for a commission, join the mailing list or buy a print. Tell us the inbox and number that should receive each one.
- Try the live website. During the free 14-day trial you test the galleries and enquiry routes on a real website. No card is needed, and you can cancel any time.
- Hand over the upkeep. We look after Buzzozo cloud hosting, SSL and software updates. Send us new work, sold notices and exhibition dates. Anything outside the plan’s agreed scope is quoted before work starts.
For example, a printmaker could list each edition with its paper, size and number left, and mark it sold out when the last one goes. A portrait painter might ask for reference photos and a deadline in the commission form. These are planning examples, not named projects or promised outcomes.
Try your own artist website free for 14 days, no card needed. If you already have a website, tell us which pages and links you want to keep.
What does the fixed £149 a month include?
The Website plan is £149 a month, fixed. It is monthly with no contract, so you can cancel any time. Our prices exclude VAT where applicable. Larger or more complex websites are quoted. The first 14 days are free, no card needed. The plans page sets out the full terms.
The table compares the plan with what premium providers typically charge when each service is bought separately. These figures are rounded from UK list prices we checked on 28 and 29 October 2026. They are a guide, not a quote, and providers change their prices.
| Service | Typical premium cost bought separately | Buzzozo Website plan |
|---|---|---|
| Custom website design | Typically around £2,000 + VAT, paid before launch | Included. Designed, written and built for your practice, with £0 upfront. |
| Managed hosting, SSL, CDN and backups | Usually a separate hosting bill, often paid a year ahead | Included. Buzzozo cloud hosting, SSL, CDN and daily backups. |

The plan covers the website and its management. Full online stores, ongoing search campaigns, paid advertising and bespoke systems are scoped and priced separately. We do not promise rankings, enquiries or sales. See how a managed website works, or compare the plans.
Questions artists ask about their website
Will my artwork look right on the website?
We prepare each image in sizes that load quickly on phones and look sharp on large screens, and we check the pages on real devices before launch. Send the best files you have; we tell you if an image needs a better photograph.
Can people buy prints from my website?
Yes. The Website plan includes print listings with buy or enquiry links to the checkout service you already use. A full online store with stock and shipping rules is scoped and quoted separately.
How do commission enquiries work?
Your commission page explains the stages, and its form asks for size, subject, price range and deadline. Each enquiry goes to the inbox you choose, so you can reply with a quote.
Do I need to register my copyright before showing work online?
No. UK guidance says copyright protection is automatic, with no application or fee. We add a copyright line and image credits, and publish only images you are entitled to use. This is not legal advice.
How much is the Website plan?
The Website plan is £149 a month, fixed, monthly with no contract. Our prices exclude VAT where applicable. Larger or more complex websites are quoted. The plans page lists the full scope and terms.
