Human answering. A team of receptionists answers from a script you agree. People cope well with a worried caller, a complaint or a question nobody planned for. You usually pay for a bundle of minutes or calls, and the price rises with the hours you want covered.

Write down your escalation rules before you start: which callers get put through, who to try next if you don't answer, and what the caller is told. Without them, every call becomes a message, and an urgent one waits as long as the rest.
Realistic limits, whichever you choose.
A message is not a booking or a quote. Most answering services take details and pass them on. Unless you give them your diary and your prices, you still make the call back.
Minutes run out. Plans are often sold by minutes or calls. A busy month can cost more than the headline price, so check the charge for going over before you compare.
AI mishears. Names, postcodes and accents can trip up an AI. Read its summaries closely for the first few weeks, and give callers a route to a person.
Contracts vary. Some providers bill monthly with a month's notice; others ask for three, six or twelve months. Read the terms as closely as the price.
